BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Citing ongoing safety and due to recent suspicious activities, the Whatcom Humane Society said today, May 27th, they are encouraging all Bellingham pet owners to keep their cats indoors.

WHS Animal Control and Rescue officers have responded to three recent cases in the Lettered Streets, Sunnyland and Roosevelt neighborhoods of Bellingham over the past month involving the partial remains of domestic cats. Veterinary examinations conducted on the cat’s remains show injuries consistent with human involvement.

WHS continues to investigate these cases and any future cases and will share and report all credible evidence to the Bellingham Police Department. At this time, no suspects have been identified.

“Domestic cats left unattended outdoors face a number of dangers, including cars, catfights, wildlife predators, becoming lost, stolen, or the victims of foul play,” says WHS Executive director Laura Clark. “We are asking the Bellingham community and surrounding areas to be mindful and keep your domestic cats inside during the day and night whenever possible.”

Anyone with information about these cases is encouraged to contact the WHS animal control and rescue department. Citizens with missing cats in Bellingham or Whatcom County should visit the Whatcom Humane Society’s Division Street shelter to complete a lost cat report.Whatcom Humane Society (May 27, 2021)
