WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Forecasters with the Seattle office of the National Weather Service have issued the following advisories and alerts due to the possibility of weather impacts.
COASTAL AREAS
Gale Warning
Northern inland waters including the San Juan Islands
Monday, January 8th, at 10pm through Wednesday, January 10th, at 4am
Southwest winds 35 to 45 kt. Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.
Coastal Flood Watch
San Juan County and Admiralty Inlet area (nearby)
Tuesday, January 9th at 2am through 4pm
Significant coastal flooding possible. Inundation of 2 to 3 feet above ground level is possible along shorelines and low-lying coastal areas.
Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure may be inundated. Some shoreline erosion may occur.
Strong low pressure is expected to move just north of the region Tuesday, which, when combined with strong westerly flow through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, may enhance the threat for coastal flooding Tuesday.
High Wind Warning
San Juan County and Admiralty Inlet area (nearby)
Tuesday, January 9th at 4am through 10pm
Southwest winds 30 to 50 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected.
Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
LOWLAND AREAS
Wind Advisory
Western Whatcom and Skagit Counties
Tuesday, January 9th at 4am through 10pm
Southwest winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
MOUNTAIN AREAS
Winter Storm Warning
Cascade mountains and valleys of Whatcom and Skagit Counties, including the Mount Baker Ski Area
Monday, January 8th, at 4am through Tuesday, January 9th, at 4am
Above 2000 feet, heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 15 inches. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
Blizzard Warning (editor’s note: rare – last issued in western Washington in 2012)
Cascade mountains and valleys of Whatcom and Skagit Counties, including the Mount Baker Ski Area
Tuesday, January 9th, at 4am through Wednesday, January 10th, at 10am
Above 2000 feet, blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 feet. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds could cause tree damage.
