WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the intersection of E Smith Road and Noon Road about 9:05am on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, due to a report of a truck versus pedestrian incident.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office reported via radio about 9:15am that the section of E Smith Road between Starry Road and Everson-Goshen Road was being closed. Whatcom County Public Works later reported the section of Noon Road is closed between Hemmi Road and Kelly Road.
The Washington State Patrol issued a press memo detailing the results of their initial investigation into incident. In it, they explained a construction vehicle was backing up eastbound along the shoulder of E Smith Road in a construction zone. A construction worker was walking westbound when they collided with the vehicle.
The construction worker, identified as a 42-year-old Ferndale man, was declared deceased at the scene.
The cause remains under investigation.
The roads were reportedly reopened about 12:45pm.
