FERNDALE, Wash. — Northbound I-5 has been detoured through a single lane bypass built in the median while work was done on replacing the fish passage culvert under the mainline lanes near the Custer rest area. Washington State Department of Transportation officials announced the work was on schedule and dates are set for reopening the I-5 mainline lanes as well as nearby Zell Road which also received a new culvert.

As of Thursday, July 16th, work remained to fill in and compact the soil around the culverts, rebuild stream beds for California Creek and repave the roadways that were removed during the work. It is expected that I-5 will be reopened sometime Sunday, July 19th, and Zell Road will be reopened on Thursday, July 23rd.

After I-5 and Zell Road have been reopened, the contractor will remove the temporary bypass lane from the median and rebuild the stream bed there.

A 5-day closure of the Grandview Road and Portal Way intersection is expected sometime in August to replace a culvert there.
