Suspect in Maple Falls home invasion arrested

MAPLE FALLS, Wash. — A 31-year-old Maple Falls man is being held in the Whatcom County Jail pending being able to post $100,000 bail after being arrested for assault and other charges stemming from a home invasion incident on November 15th.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by prosecutors in Whatcom County Superior Court, on November 17th, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies interviewed a man residing at a residence in the 6100 block of Hawthorne Place who described being assaulted by the suspect.

Deputies were told the suspect entered the residence uninvited and armed himself with a knife. The resident then wrestled with the suspect, relieving him of the knife. The suspect then struck the resident in the head with a flashlight before stealing the resident’s wallet and keys. He proceeded to leave in the resident’s vehicle without permission.

The resident was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center for head lacerations but declined to immediately make a report of the crimes.

On November 19th, deputies arrived at an address in the 700 block of Balfour Valley Drive, about a mile from the scene of the home invasion, to arrest the suspect. The suspect saw the approaching deputies and fled on foot. After a short foot pursuit, the suspect turned and put his hand in his jacket pocket while threatening to kill the deputies and himself.

According to WCSO spokesperson Deb Slater, the suspect fell and deputies were able to contact him on the ground. No gun was found and he was taken into custody.

The suspect is identified as Humberto Garcia, age 32. He is currently facing felony 1st-degree burglary, 1st-degree robbery, 2nd-degree assault and motor vehicle theft charges and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

Garcia has a prior felony conviction for 2nd-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission.

As of November 28th, Garcia remained in custody at the Whatcom County Jail pending being able to post a $100,000 bond or cash bail.
