“Super load” blocked I-5 lanes while stuck at a Blaine overpass

BLAINE, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Department of Transportation (WSDOT) personnel were dispatched this morning, May 5th, around 6am due to a report of a “super load” blocking the northbound lanes of I-5 while unable to pass under the Loomis Trail Road overpass, 1 mile north of the Birch Bay-Lynden Road interchange.

WSP Trooper Rocky Oliphant said reducing air pressure in the trailer’s tires enabled passing under the overpass. Troopers on the scene reported the overpass was only scuffed as a result.

The trucks and trailers continued to Blaine where WSP commercial vehicle enforcement were “doing very involved inspections” according to Oliphant. “I’m expecting citations will be written,” he said.

Oliphant said the trailers were hauling underwater turbines from the Port of Seattle into Canada.
