WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Officials with the City of Sumas issued the statement below to residents about 10:45am today, Friday, December 16, 2025, advising them not to attempt to return to areas within the city limits today.
Although some floodwaters have begun to recede, waters are still overflowing the Cherry Street Bridge due to continued flooding and infrastructure damage. At this time, Sumas remains unsafe for residents to return.
We understand that everyone is anxious to assess damages to their homes and property. However, for the safety of our citizens, emergency services, and city staff, the flood evacuation order remains in effect.
Current Situation
- Cherry Street Bridge remains impassable due to high water and damage.
- Floodwaters continue to pose hazards across affected areas.
- Emergency crews are actively monitoring conditions and working to restore safe access.
Looking Ahead
We are hopeful that water levels will recede enough by tomorrow to allow residents to safely return home. Updates will be provided as soon as conditions change.
Safety Reminder
Please remain in designated safe areas until the evacuation order is lifted. Your cooperation ensures the safety of the entire community.
