BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the parking lot of a retail business in the 1200 block of W Bakerview Road about 1:20pm, Sunday, March 13th, due to a report of an assault with a weapon.

Initial reports from the scene were that a person had been stabbed in the chest and Bellingham Police Department (BPD) officers were provided detailed descriptions of a suspect by radio.

Subsequent reports from witnesses were that a suspect was seen throwing an object into bushes while walking eastbound on W Bakerview Road.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies joined BPD in setting up a perimeter to the east of where the stabbing had occurred. It was reported the perimeter extended into the Cordata neighborhood.

After some time, perimeter units were dismissed without having located the suspect.

BPD Lieutenant Claudia Murphy told Whatcom News in an email that officers located a victim conscious and talking in a vehicle with a puncture wound to the chest. Officers rendered first aid until Bellingham Fire Department medics arrived. There were few details available about what led up to the victim being stabbed.

The victim was transported by BFD to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Murphy said they are working to locate a suspect that has been identified.
