WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has scheduled a rolling slowdown on southbound I-5 south of Bellingham about 8am on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

The slowdown is scheduled to begin at about 8am. All lanes of southbound I-5 will be slowed near the Samish Way interchange at exit 252. The on-ramps to southbound I-5 at Samish Way and Old Fairhaven Parkway (SR11) at exit 250 will close at about 8am.

The rolling slowdown is expected to last about 15 minutes. Contractor crews will dislodge a rock along the northbound lanes of I-5 during the slowdown. The work is part of a stabilization project following a landslide on March 19, 2026.

Northbound I-5 remains closed south of Bellingham. Traffic is diverted at North Lake Samish Road at exit 246. WSDOT expects to reopen northbound I-5 by about 5am on April 16, 2026, following a slope evaluation by geotechnical engineers.

Freight traffic is detoured via northbound SR9 and westbound Mount Baker Highway (SR542). Passenger vehicles may use SR11 or SR9 as alternate routes.
