BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a report of a single-engine airplane with 2 people aboard that had crashed on a runway at Bellingham International Airport today, April 14th, around 4:45pm.
According to Bellingham Fire Department Firefighter and Public Information Officer Dustin Michaelis, there had been 1 person on the plane who was uninjured.
Port of Bellingham Aviation Director Sunil Harman said a 1980 Cessna 172 flown by a student pilot was landing on runway #2 #34 about 4:40pm when it touched down and crashed, ending up upside down.
Harman said the pilot, the only occupant, was able to exit the plane on their own and reported being uninjured.
The airport’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting personnel responded to the scene with support from Bellingham Fire according to Harman.
The runway was closed until 6:30pm so the damaged airplane could be removed and the runway inspected, Harman said. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the crash.
