Shelter in place advisory given for Lummi Islanders, possible evacuation warned for Lummi Peninsula

LUMMI ISLAND/PENINSULA, Wash. — Officials with Whatcom County Public Works issued an advisory today, November 16th, noting most routes to/from the Lummi Peninsula were closed due to flooding.

The advisory tells residents of Lummi Island to shelter in place and Peninsula residents be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

An evacuation route (see below) will remain open as long as possible, but is expected to flood at some point today.

This route should be used for emergencies and first responders only. Drivers should prepare for heavy traffic and long delays. There will be limited or no access on or off the Lummi Peninsula this afternoon through late this evening.

Whatcom County Fire Districts 7 and 11 and Medic 1 have pre-positioned personnel and apparatus at Gooseberry Point to provide medical services in the event that the peninsula is cut off from the mainland by water.

Residents on the peninsula and island are to continue to call 911 for emergencies.
