FERNDALE, Wash. — A several mile section of I-5 was the scene of multiple non-injury crashes, between 7pm and 8pm on Wednesday, January 18th.
About the same time an active localized weather system was passing east over parts of the Ferndale, Custer and Blaine areas dumping measurable hail and was responsible for at least 1 lightning strike east of I-5. Error, group does not exist! Check your syntax! (ID: 11)

Washington State Trooper Kelsey Harding told Whatcom News that troopers responded to 6 separate crashes involving a total of 19 vehicles. The area spanned about 9 miles of I-5 in both directions from north of the Birch Bay-Lynden Road interchange to south of the Main Street interchange in Ferndale.
Traffic was reported backed up through the area past 9pm due to blocked lanes until the disabled vehicles could be towed.
