The City of Ferndale revealed today, September 30th, they have “received a proposed ‘binding site plan’ for a large-scale retail development of around 120,000 square feet.”
Rumors have been rampant for months about a large retailer opening in Ferndale and this is the closest to thing to tangible evidence.
The location is 5530 Nordic Way, where Sawarne Lumber has been located.
There are many more regulatory steps to follow and hoops yet to jump through before the development can be considered a certainty. According to the city’s announcement,
This project will also be the first major implementation of the EAGLE Program for retail development. Adopted in 2008, this innovative program allows retail developers to meet certain environmental, social, and economic objectives in a variety of ways that benefit Ferndale.
The City of Ferndale has been challenged to manage its budget in the absence of retail sales tax other cities of similar size typically have. The prospect of a big retailer opening in Ferndale will go a long way to address that need.
Traffic concerns will be paramount for most people who already drive through that area. To that end, the City Council authorized the design of a roundabout at the intersection of Main Street and LaBounty Drive.
