UPDATED: Police response closes Northwest Avenue north of I-5 Thursday night

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Personnel with Bellingham Police Department (BPD) were dispatched to reports of an assault with a weapon in the 4000 block of Northwest Drive about 7:45pm on Thursday, January 18th.

About 8:50pm, officials with BPD issued the following announcement.

Northwest is closed from the roundabout off of I-5 to Spring Hill Suites due to a police investigation. People can still access the hotel from Bakerview and go south on Northwest. The Home 2 Suites can be access from the back parking lot of Hampton Inn, which has a direct connection to Home Rd/Home Ln.

The road should reopen in a couple hours.

Bellingham Police Department (January 18, 2024)

BPD later reported the road had been reopened by 10pm.

The BPD press log says police were able to locate both parties to the assault and Matthew David Coltrane, age 32, was arrested.

Whatcom County Jail records indicate Coltrane is charged with suspicion of 1st-degree assault.
