Opinion: Supports Shewmake for 42nd district state house representative

Love is love. The government should not dictate what loving relationships between consenting adults look like. This issue was decided by voters eight years ago when 55% of Whatcom County voters agreed with Referendum 74. In 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed in its ruling on the landmark case of Obergefell v. Hodges that marriage rights are guaranteed to same-sex couples by the United States Constitution.

A recent letter to the editor suggested Jennifer Sefzik was being attacked based on her religion because her opponent pointed out that Sefzik does not support allowing same-sex couples to marry and believes employers should be able to discriminate against gay people.

These views are out of touch and would seek to overturn the will of the voters and defy the U.S. Constitution. Everyone deserves to know where their candidates stand on these important issues. Pointing out Sefzik’s stance is not an attack on religion or her religious beliefs and freedoms. It is simply asking that people of faith do not impose their faith on others against their will, a fundamentally American ideal that was established with the founding of the United States.

Jennifer Sefzik is free to practice her faith and entitled to her beliefs, but when she seeks to overturn the will of the voters and use the power of the state to impose her beliefs on others, the people she seeks to represent should know that. I hope you will join me in casting your vote for religious freedom, for respecting the will of the voters, and voting to re-elect Rep. Shewmake.
