North Cascades Highway (SR20) to close temporarily Thursday due to significant rain and snow forecast

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced the North Cascades Highway (SR20) will close temporarily beginning today, Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 5pm. It will be closed between milepost 134 near the Ross Dam trailhead and milepost 171 at the Silver Star SnoPark.

Drier weather is in the forecast beginning next week, and maintenance and avalanche crews will reassess conditions on Monday, Nov. 17, with the potential to clear and reopen that section of the highway. There is no estimated time to reopen. Reopening the route is not certain and is based on multiple factors, including snowpack levels in avalanche pathways and winter maintenance needs throughout the region.

Motorists should be warned to be prepared in the event this results in the beginning of the season’s months-long closure.
