FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the City of Ferndale say motorists will be welcome to use the newly constructed Thornton Street overpass beginning 3pm on Saturday, December 2nd, following a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The 1pm ceremony will include speeches and a ribbon cutting followed by a motorcade across the overpass at 1:20pm made up of city vehicles.

The overpass will open to the public beginning at 3pm.

The overpass will connect Thornton Street with the southbound I-5 off- and on-ramp roundabout at Portal Way providing the second means of crossing the BNSF Rail tracks in Ferndale without having to stop for passing trains. The Main Street underpass is the only other railway bypass. It is hoped the Thornton Street overpass will relieve some of the traffic volume currently on Main Street.

It was after over 3 decades of planning and strategizing when design and funding solutions came together in 2018. Construction began in 2020.
