John Hiatt, a 47-year-old male from Marysville, Washington, was arrested early Sunday morning after an incident at the Silver Reef Casino and Hotel.

According to information received from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a room at the Silver Reef Hotel at 4876 Haxton Way about 4am Sunday morning after receiving a report of an armed robbery with a handgun.

A male, later identified as Hiatt, answered the door when deputies arrived at the room and, when told they were there regarding a report of an armed robbery, said there had not been a robbery. When deputies asked why someone would report a robbery, Hiatt said, “Because she’s a prostitute.”

Hiatt invited the deputies into his hotel room and told them he had hired a prostitute through an adult website and paid her for sex. A woman was contacted by deputies and it was learned that during the act the condom had come off. The woman told deputies she thought Hiatt had removed it on purpose. She said that was not been part of their agreement and told him to stop. Hiatt stopped and demanded his money back.

Hiatt pulled a handgun out of a bag and demanded the money. The woman told deputies she gave him the money fearing he would shoot her.

Deputies located the bag and found the gun and the money inside.

Hiatt was booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of 1st degree robbery and patronizing a prostitute.

According to jail records, Hiatt had posted an unspecified posted bail or bond and released Sunday evening.
