Maple Falls man suspected of shooting deputies, found guilty of attempted murder

MAPLE FALLS, Wash. — A Maple Falls man facing multiple charges stemming from a 2022 incident that left 2 Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies with injuries to their heads from shotgun blasts has been found guilty of 2 counts of 1st-degree attempted murder.

According to Whatcom County Superior Court records, Joel Berck Young, now age 63, had been facing the following charges.

  • 2 counts of 1st-degree felony attempted murder
  • 2 counts of 2nd-degree felony assault with a deadly weapon
  • felony harassment/threats
  • 6 counts of gross misdemeanor reckless endangerment

Court records indicate prosecutors amended the list of charges on September 9th to include only the attempted murder charges.

Court records say Young pled guilty on Thursday, September 19th, and subsequently found guilty of the 2 counts of 2nd-degree attempted murder after his jury trial had begun. He was immediately placed into the custody of Whatcom County Jail.

Sentencing is expected be scheduled for a yet to be determined date.
