MAPLE FALLS, Wash. — The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported today, June 1st, they had arrested a Maple Falls man after responding to a report of a fight Monday.
WCSO reported that around 6pm on May 31st WCSO deputies were dispatched to a report of a fight in the 1400 block of Green Valley Court in Maple Falls. The reporting party said 3 men were punching each other. The caller indicated 1 was believed to be armed with a handgun.
Shortly after the report of fighting, several reports of multiple shots being fired in the neighborhood were received.
Deputies arrived and came upon a man standing in his front yard, yelling at neighbors while waving a handgun. According to neighbors, the man had fired numerous rounds from his front yard.
The man refused deputies’ requests to put the gun down. After several minutes of deputies using de-escalation techniques, he did put the gun down and was safely detained.
One neighbor reported hiding in a vehicle the man had been shooting at. 2 of the vehicle’s windows were broken.
Several 9mm shell casings were found in the grass in front of the residence and a 9mm handgun recovered at the scene.
The man, identified as Anthony Griego, age 61, of Maple Falls, was arrested by WCSO deputies for 1st degree assault and transported and booked into the Whatcom County Jail. No one was injured, WCSO said.
