FERNDALE, Wash. — In January of 2024, 3 people drove to a park in Ferndale expecting to purchase marijuana. Instead, they were robbed and 1 was shot as they drove away.
Ferndale Police arrested Javier Fernando Flores, age 20, today, April 30th. According to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Whatcom County Superior Court by prosecutors, Flores is suspected of being the person who was waiting for the others in the park.
The affidavit says Ferndale Police were dispatched to a report that a 16-year-old was at PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with a gunshot wound suffered at a Ferndale park. Police were told the victim and a friend had been driven to Cedar Creek Park to purchase marijuana from a man known to them as “Javi.”
When the 3 arrived at the park, “Javi” walked up to their vehicle, pointed a gun and demanded money. He was provided the money and the 3 drove away. The victim said there was a loud bang and then a pain in his shoulder. He was driven to the emergency room after seeing blood.
The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to have the .45 bullet removed. Police located a .45 casing at the park.
Further investigation led police to believe “Javi” is Flores and a warrant was issued for his arrest on April 22nd.
Flores currently faces the following charges in Whatcom County Superior Court.
- 1st-degree robbery (felony)
- 1st-degree assault (felony)
- 2nd-degree assault (felony)
- displaying a weapon (gross misdemeanor)
As of April 30th, Flores was being held in the Whatcom County Jail without the option to post bail.
