LUMMI NATION, Wash. — Lummi Nation Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2900 block of Cagey Road about 8:15pm on October 29th due to report of a domestic violence incident.
A suspect, identified as Johnnie Cannon Hewett, age 30 and of Bellingham, fled the scene before officers arrived and was located in a vehicle, prompting a pursuit. According to police radio transmissions at the time, Hewett fled north on Haxton Way, west on Lampman Road, north on Olson Road, west on Unick Road, south on Elder Road, west on Slater Road, south on Lake Terrell Road, east on Waldron Drive and then east on N Red River Road.
Hewett reportedly then rammed a police vehicle resulting it being disabled in a ditch.
At 8:30 p.m., Lummi Law & Order reported that Hewett had rammed an occupied patrol vehicle in the 3200 block of N. Red River Rd. Shots were fired by a Lummi officer. Hewett then fled.
Multiple agencies responded to assist in the apprehension of Hewett, establishing a perimeter in the area. Following a K-9 track, Hewett was located and taken into custody a short distance away. He was booked into the Whatcom County Jail for Eluding, Attempted Vehicular Assault and Malicious Mischief 1st.
The officer in the rammed vehicle sustained minor injuries and has been medically cleared.
The Bellingham Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Ferndale Police Department, FBI, U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), King County Guardian 1 (Helicopter), and the Bellingham Fire Department assisted.
This has been classified as an officer-involved shooting incident, with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) assuming primary investigative responsibilities. This is an active investigation.
