Man convicted of vehicular assault in 2022 is back in jail suspected of same

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a report of a serious injury crash on Northwood and Pangborn Roads about 6:20pm on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

According to documents filed in Whatcom County Superior Court, responding Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies were advised a driver had left the scene on a bicycle retrieved from their vehicle. Soon after, a citizen reported a “clearly injured suspicious person” at a nearby address.

The other driver was described as severely injured and was tended to by medics and deputies at the scene.

A deputy responded to the report of a suspicious person nearby and located a man on a bicycle. The man attempted to flee the deputy first on the bicycle and then on foot. The man, identified as Bailey Rae McCorkhill, age 29, ultimately gave up fleeing and was placed under arrest.

The other driver was transported by an aid unit to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center and flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle due to the severity of her injuries.

WCSO’s initial investigation of the crash showed a red Saturn SUV was traveling on Pangborn Road at speed in excess of 60mph and failed to stop at the stop sign at Northwood Road. It collided in the intersection with a dark Mazda that was traveling on Northwood Road. Approaching the intersection, Northwood Road has a 50mph speed limit and Pangborn has a 35mph speed limit.

McCorkhill was treated for injuries suffered in the crash and booked into the Whatcom County Jail on September 15, 2025. He faces the following felony charges in Whatcom County Superior Court as a result of the crash.

  • vehicular assault – driving in a reckless manner resulting in substantial bodily harm
  • vehicular assault – driving under the influence resulting in substantial bodily harm
  • hit and run following an injury accident

McCorkhill is a convicted felon having been found guilty of the following felony crimes since 2023.

  • harassment/threats
  • possession of a stolen vehicle
  • resisting arrest
  • forgery

The vehicular assault charge stemmed from an incident in 2022 where McCorkhill had intentionally crashed into a car occupied by a woman and a child.

At the time of the recent crash, McCorkhill was awaiting trial in Whatcom County Superior Court in a case where he is suspected of felony burglary and gross misdemeanor theft and malicious mischief. He was out of custody after having posted a $5,000 bond on September 4, 2025.

As of September 17, 2025, McCorkhill remained in custody after the recent arrest and is awaiting a preliminary hearing where bail, if any, could be set.
