Man arrested, suspected of entering Blaine residence, raping woman he knew

BLAINE, Wash. — Blaine Police investigated a rape that reportedly occurred on July 23rd and subsequently arrested a 48-year-old man and booked him into Whatcom County Jail on July 27th charged with suspicion of rape and burglary.

According to court documents, Darrell James Cochran showed up at the victim’s residence early on July 23rd with alcoholic beverage and appeared intoxicated. The victim and another woman reported he made unwanted physical contact with them and was told to leave and he did. The other woman later left.

The victim reportedly awoke in the residence later that day to find Cochran holding her down and forcing himself on her causing pain and bruising. She attempted to use a cellphone to call for help and he grabbed it and tossed it out of reach. She told investigators she repeatedly told him “no” and “stop” and screamed for help hoping nearby neighbors might hear.

After investigating the reported rape, Blaine Police arrested Cochran and he now faces the following charges in Whatcom County Superior Court.

  • 1st-degree rape
  • 1st-degree burglary

Cochran appeared at a preliminary hearing on July 29th where prosecutors requested bail be set at $250,000 and the defense requested a lower amount with a $5,000 cash alternative. The court set bail at $50,000 bond or $5,000 cash. Cochran was released later that day after posting bond.

An arraignment hearing is scheduled for August 9th.
