M5.1 Earthquake detected ~55 miles northwest of Whatcom County

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Seismologists with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PSNS) reported an earthquake was detected about 1:25pm today, Friday, February 21, 2025, about 160 miles east of Port Alice, BC. The epicenter was about 55 miles northwest of Whatcom County.

The earthquake was determined to have had a magnitude of 5.1 and an epicenter depth of about 6.2 miles.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement about 5 minutes after the quake saying there was no tsunami danger from the quake.

No property damage was immediately reported. People as far south as Bellevue reported feeling the quake and several reports came from within Whatcom County.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake is considered a “moderate earthquake.” Earthquakes in this range may be felt regionally and are not expected to cause more than very light damage.
