Large storage building destroyed by morning fire

FERNDALE, Wash. — A 3-story tall farm storage building on Matz Road has been destroyed in a fire this morning, September 8th.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) and North Whatcom Fire and Rescue firefighters were dispatched shortly after 6am this morning to a report of a structure fire in the 1600 block of Matz Road.

According to WCFD7 Division Chief Ben Boyko, they arrived to find the entire building on fire. A large pile of hay was stored inside along with some farm vehicles, other equipment and supplies.

My Ferndale News readers reported being able to see the tall dark plume of smoke coming from the fire from several miles away.

The building had collapsed and all contents were fully involved in the fire. Firefighters took a defensive stance to protect the surrounding area. Boyko said that given the large stack of burning hay, he expected firefighters would likely be there into the evening.

Boyko said no injuries were reported and no other structures were involved. Whatcom County Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause.

WCFD7 Fire Chief Larry Hoffman said an excavator and an operator had been called in and firefighters were protecting them as they picked through the burning debris to assist with mop up and the fire investigators.
