Kendall Elementary classes temporarily cancelled after car crashes into building

MAPLE FALLS, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 8:45pm on Saturday, January 25, 2025, due to reports of a car that had crashed into the Kendall Elementary School building.

Whatcom County Fire District 14 Fire Chief Jerry DeBruin told Whatcom News they arrived to find a compact 4-door sedan appeared to have left Kendall Road (SR547), hit a raised landscaping bed, became airborne, landed and then proceeded into the building.

The vehicle ended up partially into the building.

DeBruin said they transported the driver to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center by ambulance.

Washington State Patrol trooper Kelsey Harding told Whatcom News the vehicle was a red 2009 Ford Focus and the adult driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

Officials with the Mount Baker School District announced that, due to the damage, all classes in the building were cancelled Monday, January 27, 2025. They expected to be able to return to regular class schedules and operations on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
