UPDATED: Intalco smelter expected to remain open after all

4/12/16 8pm: This story was updated with information from the BPA website.

The anticipated idling of the smelter at Intalco may not happen for at least another two years Dave Gallagher at the Bellingham Herald reported late today.

Gallagher quoted state Rep. Luanne Van Werven, R-Lynden, who was aware of a new pricing agreement between Alcoa, Inc. and the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), as saying it would keep the smelter going for up to two years.

Officials from BPA, Alcoa and the workers’ union have yet to release comments related to this announcement.

According to a document located on the BPA website dated today, April 12th, BPA is in the process of considering an amendment to the current “Power Sales Agreement” with Alcoa.  The term of the Amendment would begin on July 1st and expire on February 14th, 2018.

Prior to making a final decision and even though BPA’s “preference customers” were already included in the process, comments from regional customers, stakeholders and other interested parties are being sought according to the document. The comment period extends to noon on April 22nd.
