UPDATED: Crash involved an ambulance on Mount Baker Highway

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 1800 block of Mount Baker Highway about 11:50am today, February 17th, due to a report of an injury crash involving an ambulance.

Approximate location of the crash

Initial reports from the scene were that both lanes were blocked and none of the injured would require transport to the hospital.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding said traffic was being detoured around the crash site via Noon Road, Everson-Goshen Road and E Kelly Road. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Both lanes were reopened at 1pm.

Whatcom County Fire District 1 Fire Chief Mel Blankers told Whatcom News the ambulance was occupied by only the driver. It was being driven to Bellingham for some maintenance when the driver swerved to the side of the road to avoid a head-on crash with an approaching SUV. The SUV still side-swiped the ambulance, doing substantial damage according to Blankers.

Trooper Harding said the Dodge Durango SUV suffered heavy front end damage as a result of the crash.
