UPDATED: I-5 lane closed south of Bellingham after passenger jumps from bus

ALGER, Wash. — A lane of northbound I-5 south of Bellingham was reportedly closed as of 4:10pm on Sunday, December 7, 2025, after a passenger reportedly jumped from a bus.

The incident occurred in the area of the Alger/Lake Samish Road interchange.

The right lane is blocked N5 just south of MP240 for a subject who jumped from a moving commercial tour bus. Sadly, this is a fatal incident. Please be patient while troopers on scene investigate this tragic incident. There is no ETA for the right lane to reopen.

Washington State Department of Transportation reported the lane closure about 3:25pm.

The WSP issued a press memo about 9pm detailing the incident. It stated that at about 3pm the bus was northbound on I-5 when a passenger opened the door of the bus and jumped into the roadway. The bus struck the passenger and both the passenger and the bus came to rest on the right shoulder.

The passenger was identified as a 34-year-old man from Hawaii. He was declared deceased at the scene.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved and the cause remains under investigation.
