I-5 Custer rest areas to reopen in time for Memorial Day weekend

CUSTER, Wash. — Both the northbound and southbound I-5 rest areas at Custer have been closed since March this year to allow for crews to perform maintenance and improvements.

According to an announcement today, May 26th, from officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation, both rest areas will reopen Friday, May 28th.

The closures occurred while the US-Canada border remained closed due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns and addressed “safety and critical on-site repairs” including the following.

  • enhancements and improvements to sidewalks, curbing and pedestrian walkways
  • trimming and removal of hazardous trees
  • full cleaning and upgrades to septic system and pumps
  • sealing skylights and removing debris from rooftops
  • graffiti and junk removal
  • restriping of parking lines and pavement markings
  • asphalt preservation, crack sealing, ramp improvements

The US-Canada border remains closed to non-essential traffic with no date estimate for reopening.
