I-5 closures expected to bring southbound traffic impacts around Ferndale

FERNDALE, Wash. — Washington State Department of Transportation warns motorists to expect traffic impacts on I-5 around Ferndale due to several ramp and lane closures scheduled between today, Friday, September 5, 2025, and Monday, September 8, 2025.

  • From 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, the southbound I-5 Portal Way on- and off-ramps will close. 
  • From 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, the right lane of southbound I-5 will close near Portal Way. 
  • From 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, the left lane of southbound I-5 will close near Portal Way. 
  • From 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, to 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, the right lane of southbound I-5 between SR 543 and Portal (mileposts 275-263) will close. 
  • Nightly, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, Sept. 8, to Wednesday morning, Sept. 10, the right lane of southbound I-5 near Portal Way and the Portal Way on- and off-ramps will close.

The closures are required while WSDOT contractors grind down and repave the ramps. This is part of the southbound I-5 Nooksack River to Blaine paving project.
