High winds result in blocked roads, power outages across Whatcom County

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders have been busy this morning, Monday, November 4th, as they deal with the impacts of high winds gusting across Whatcom County.

Puget Sound Energy reported about 4,500 of their customers’ addresses in Whatcom County were without power at about 10:30am. Several localized outages were reported, the most impactful being north of Birch Bay with about 2,500 customer addresses without power.

A weather station in Ferndale reported a 58mph gust at about 9am and a quarter inch of rain was reported to have fallen since midnight.

Several locations with trees and lines down blocking roads have been reported across the county. Motorists are advised to be alert to such hazards.

Officials with Whatcom County Public Works announced the following road closures at about noon.

  • Birch Bay-Lynden Road from Blaine Road to Harborview Road
  • Harborview Road from Anderson Road to Birch Bay Drive
  • Cedarville Road from Mt Baker Highway (SR542) to Goshen Road
