Updated: Gas line ruptured at Meador Avenue bridge project site

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Officials with the Bellingham Fire Department issued the following statement about 10:30am on Thursday, September 12th, via their Facebook social media account.

A 2-inch natural gas line was hit by a construction company while working on the Meador Ave bridge. Cascade Natural Gas is on scene and working to mitigate the issue. It will take several hours until the issue will be resolved. During this time, there will be a strong odor in the area. Surrounding homes and businesses in the vicinity have been notified to evacuate or shelter in place. Please avoid the area until the situation is resolved. We will update here when more information is available.

According to the project page on the City of Bellingham website, “Meador Street bridge is now closed to install the permanent bridge. Construction will last through the fall on the Meador Street Bridge.”

About 2:30pm, officials with the Bellingham Fire Department said, “Cascade Natural Gas has reported that the repair has been completed.”
