WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Officials with “Whatcom Ready,” referred to as a community initiative working with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management (DEM), recently released information regarding recent flooding impacts.

Whatcom Ready says officials are using lessons learned from the 2021 mid-November flooding disaster.

DEM has activated the emergency operations center to coordinate the response across agencies that include first responders, public works and municipal partners. The DEM is reportedly meeting with county leaders twice daily to assess needs and share information.

After another day of heavy rainfall, the Nooksack River rose higher than 2021 levels that flooded entire communities within Whatcom County.

On Wednesday, residents of Sumas, Nooksack and Everson were evacuated, as was Marietta and portions of Ferndale, and flood waters covered streets and closed businesses in those cities.

Overnight, from Wednesday into Thursday, Dec. 11, the National Weather Service’s forecast changed from “moderate” to “major flooding” which led to a mudslide on Silver Lake Road, a landslide in Kendall that damaged one home, several bridge closures, and overtopping of levees as well as potential damage to the Twin View dike.

Everson City Hall and businesses did sustain damage overnight. Crews are assessing the damages this morning, and more details are expected to be available later today and tomorrow regarding the extent of the damage.

Additionally, the border crossing at Sumas was closed and personnel evacuated after water covered Badger Road at Van Buren.
