FERNDALE, Wash. — Whatcom County Fire District 7 firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke coming from an apartment in the 2300 block of Main Street just after 5pm today, May 9th.

WCFD7 Assistant Fire Chief Dean Crosswhite said they arrived to find the fire had been extinguished thanks to the quick thinking and actions of a couple neighbor boys, ages 15 and 7.

Crosswhite said the 7-year-old noticed smoke coming from the balcony of a second-story apartment and alerted the 15-year-old. When it was discovered no one was in the apartment at the time, the older boy climbed up to the balcony. Using a fire extinguisher from the building, he was able to extinguish the fire.

Crosswhite said the fire appeared to have started in an ash can and spread to nearby patio furniture. The 15-year-old was treated for a minor injury at the scene.
