A warning to Ferndale merchants has been posted on the City’s web site.
The scammer presents what appears to be a valid a pre-paid debit card at check out. But since it is not a valid card, the card cannot be read electronically. The store clerk is then asked to type in the numbers, which are accepted.
At the time of the City’s warning, Ferndale Police had only received one report within the city of Ferndale but there have been reports elsewhere in Whatcom County.
