FERNDALE, Wash. — Contrary to yesterday’s pessimistic forecast, the Ferndale area woke this morning, Saturday, September 19th, to air quality in the “GOOD” zone for the first time since wildfire smoke moved into the area 8 days ago.
Air quality in southwestern Washington and Oregon saw dramatic improvements yesterday, moving from the “UNHEALTHY” zone into the “GOOD” zone. Persistent southerly winds in the Puget Sound region, which had previously been pulling in smoke from these areas, began pulling in this cleaner air while pushing the smoke out providing the same dramatic improvement.
A days-old air quality alert is expected to expire at 11am this morning. UPDATE: The alert was removed about 7am.
There is a good chance for precipitation today in the Ferndale area but it will fall as light rain with less than a tenth of an inch expected according to the National Weather Service forecast. Light south winds of 10mph with gusts around 20mph are also expected today.
