Expect delays after car versus pole crash on Valley Highway (SR9)

DEMING, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a report of a car versus pole crash with the pole and lines down on the car in the 3400 block of Valley Highway (SR9) about 10am today, Wednesday, June 8th.

Approximate location of crash

Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding told Whatcom News there was a car vs pole crash that resulted in live wires down at the scene.

Whatcom County Fire District 16 Fire Chief Hank Maleng said they arrived to find the power pole laying on the car and the driver was able to get out without assistance. The driver was assessed by aid personnel and refused transport by ambulance.

Harding said Puget Sound Energy crews had been requested and there was a 2-to-3-hour estimate for the crew tasked with replacing the pole to respond. Harding said the tow company won’t be able to clear the crashed vehicle until the wires can be cleared.

Traffic was being alternated through the crash scene via the northbound lane.

Harding said no charges were pending but the driver of the 2005 GMC Envoy that was involved in the crash would likely be issued a citation for driving with wheels off the roadway.
