Ferndale Police were quick to respond to a report of a crash at the I-5 southbound on-ramp and Portal Way roundabout. So quick that the fleeing driver was taken into custody only a few hundred feet away.

A witness to the crash called 9-1-1 about 8:30pm last night and said the driver appeared to be fleeing to the south. The driver was located in the vicinity of the Ferndale Edaleen Dairy store by Ferndale Police minutes later according to police radio transmissions.

It was a non-injury single-car crash according to Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Heather Axtman. The car, a 2000 Chevrolet Impala, had been driven off the roadway at the on-ramp to southbound I-5.

Firefighters from Whatcom County Fire District 7 were dispatched to the crash when it was first thought the Chevrolet may have been on fire.
