BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the mountain biking trails on Gailbraith Mountain in Bellingham about 1pm on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, due to reports of a seriously injured cyclist.

Officials with South Whatcom Fire Authority (SWFA) reported they and Bellingham Fire Department paramedics responded to a “significant medical incident.”

SWFA said they requested Airlift Northwest respond to a landing zone set up in Lake Padden Park. Airlift NW transported the cyclist to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle “due to the specialized care needed for the patient.”

Specific types of patients benefit from rapid air transport because they are located further from an area hospital, or would benefit from transport to a specialty hospital further away that provides the patient the highest level of care for their particular condition.
