Community encouraged to celebrate FHS Class of 2020

FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the Ferndale School District confirmed today, June 9th, they are organizing a community-wide “Make Some Noise” event for this Friday evening, June 12th.

Ferndale High School (FHS) graduates of the class of 2020 have missed out on what has been considered typical rites of passage due to the closing of school buildings and the state’s Stay Home, Stay Safe order along with continued health safety mandates. So creative means to celebrate their accomplishments have been in the works.

The Ferndale School District will turn on the FHS stadium lights in honor of the graduating FHS class of 2020 Friday, June 12th, at 8:20pm (aka 2020 in military time). At that time, members of the community are encouraged to make some noise from the comfort and safety of their residences.

“We really hope that we hear a roar starting at 8:20pm,” said FHS Principal Jeremy Vincent. “This is our opportunity as a community to really make a big noise, a big statement for this class. As their principal, I want these students to hear pride and celebration from people who support them and wish them well.”

In addition, some parents of FHS graduates applied for a special event permit with the City of Ferndale and, after some meetings to fine tune the plans, were approved for a parade of vehicles through town. Organizers say families and the community are welcome to line the parade route, reverse of the regular Old Settlers Picnic Grand Parade route, to cheer the seniors on while maintaining 6-foot physical distancing.

According to organizers, seniors in private vehicles will begin parading to FHS from Pioneer Park in time to arrive at the school campus for the School District’s 8:20pm celebrating. There will be no road closures around the parade route and parade participants will be required to observe traffic signals along the route.
