Charge against WWU dean dropped, WWU internal investigation continues

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Whatcom County Jail and Superior Court records indicate that John Danneker, age 48, a WWU dean arrested on October 14th, was released from custody and no charges were filed with the court.

Danneker reportedly had communicated with an adult man via an online dating service while the man was posing as a 16-year-old. The man confronted Danneker when he allegedly arrived to meet the fictional person in front of Haggard Hall on the WWU campus.

Whatcom County Prosecutor’s Office reportedly told other news outlets that the age of consent for sexual relations in Washington state is 16 years. So, even if he had sex with a 16-year-old person, no crime would have been committed.

Officials with Western Washington University (WWU) told Whatcom News that Danneker remains on administrative leave while an internal review of the situation that led to his arrest continues.
