Ferndale mayoral and city council candidates, including those running unopposed, answered questions posed during a public forum Tuesday, October 13th, at the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center hosted by the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce.
Each candidate was offered 2 minutes to respond to questions asked. Ferndale High School social studies teachers, Scott Browne and Jennifer Kubic, served as moderators. Many students could be seen in the crowd of nearly 70 attendees.
The following is a depiction of the questions and answers but in some cases responses have been paraphrased. This is not to alter the intended meaning or emphasis but due to limitations in hearing and recording verbatim.
Question: If money was no issue, what would be your top priority?
Teresa Taylor – Schools. I talk to teachers and school board members and they feel the schools are crumbling.
Jon Mutchler – There are lots of things but one would be streets and roads, especially connecting Thornton Street to I-5. Alleviate the downtown problem. Roundabouts on main street will enable more retail to develop there. Would like to fix the traffic problems.
Rebecca Xczar – We need more sidewalks all over. Main Street traffic needs improving and synchronized lights could do that.
Paul Ingram – The Thornton Street overpass because once that’s complete the mixed use retail zoned around there will “explode” with development.
Keith Olson – I agree with streets and sidewalks since we haven’t been able to fund repairs and improvements for years. 2nd would be the Thornton Street overpass. Not to diminish the need for schools but as a city we have no say in that.
Greg Hanson – I’d want to build a larger bridge across the river and bust a hole under the railroad tracks to keep traffic flowing through the town.
Cathy Watson – roads and sidewalks – we know we need them but we struggle to find the money. A pool/rec center run by the ymca would be 2nd on the list.
Glenn Stewart – Definitely roads. I sit on the board of the Double Dome rec center. Widen the roads and bridges, a second bridge over the river (one way each way) connect VanderYacht Park.
