WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — According to officials with the North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NCNPSC), the Border 2 Fire and Luna Fire continue to burn within the park complex in Whatcom County under full suppression management.
On July 25, 2026, activity decreased on the Border 2 Fire, which was last estimated at 1,255 acres, before fire activity increased on July 26 under warmer and drier conditions, according to North Cascades National Park Service Complex. The Border 2 Fire is located about 0.8 miles from Hozomeen, according to NCNPSC.
Two Type-3 helicopters, Air Attack, four Scoopers, two Wildland Fire Modules, and one firefighting ground crew are supporting suppression and structure protection efforts in the Hozomeen area. Personnel are installing hose lay along the road system in preparation for potential defensive firefighting operations, according to NCNPSC.
The Luna Fire was last estimated at 330 acres and remains east of Big Beaver Creek and north of McMillan Creek in Whatcom County.
Area, trail, and camp closures are in effect for public safety in the areas of the Luna Fire and Border 2 Fire, according to NCNPSC. Smoke is present in the area, and visitors should expect smoke impacts in the Ross Lake area.
Campfires and the burning of wood, briquettes, or other fuel in fire pits, fire pans, and barbecue grills are banned in all portions of North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Gas or propane devices are permitted if no flammable material is within 3 feet. Drones are prohibited in the area.
