Blaine family displaced after propane grill fire spreads into house

BLAINE, Wash. — North Whatcom Fire & Rescue, Whatcom County Fire District 7 and Lynden Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a residential fire yesterday in the 7400 block of Clamdigger Drive about 5:40pm. The resident had called 911 reporting the propane tank on an outdoor barbecue grill was on fire.

Firefighters arrived to discover the fire had spread into the house’s attic space NWFR Fire Chief Jason Van der Veen told Whatcom News.

The residence suffered significant of damage due to the water pumped into the attic and the need to tear down interior roofing to get at the fire. A hole was cut into the roof by firefighters to keep the fire from seeking other paths to follow, according to Van der Veen.

There were no injuries to the residents or to firefighters but the 3 residents were displaced and are staying with family.
