Bicyclist transported to Harborview after Old Fairhaven Parkway crash

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 2:45pm on Thursday, November 9th, to the area of Old Fairhaven Parkway and 14th Street due to reports of a car versus pedestrian injury crash. They arrived to find an injured bicyclist.

Bellingham Police Department (BPD) Lieutenant Claudia Murphy told Whatcom News via email today that officers arrived to find the bicyclist on the ground being tended to by several people, including Bellingham Fire Department personnel. A bicycle was located nearby with a damaged tire.

The BPD investigation revealed a 2018 GMC pickup truck had been stopped eastbound at the crosswalk at 14th Street due to an activated pedestrian light. The driver had started to pull forward after the pedestrian cleared the crosswalk when the bicyclist struck the side of the truck. A witness in another vehicle stopped at the pedestrian crosswalk reported seeing the bicyclist coming down 14th Street on the roadway and collide with the side of the truck.

Murphy said, “It appears the cyclist turned into the truck, just as the truck started driving through the clear pedestrian crosswalk. No citations have been issued as of this date.”

The bicyclist, identified as a 24-year-old woman, was transported from the scene with serious injuries. Family has said online that she is receiving treatment for severe injuries at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
