BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Officials with the City of Bellingham announced yesterday, October 17th, that the left-turn lane on northbound Meridian Street to access the northbound I-5 on-ramp will be permanently closed beginning Tuesday, October 22nd.

This change addresses long-standing safety concerns and a history of collisions at the intersection. It also improves traffic flow and efficiency.

Drivers can access I-5 northbound via the Bakerview onramp or take Birchwood to the Northwest onramp.

Some temporary delays are anticipated as drivers adjust to the new configuration. Signs will be in place to direct traffic.

Absolutely absurd recommendations for alternatives. The problem with that intersection is the city has never taken the time to devise a proper left turn lane light system to move traffic safely and efficiently.

Isn’t this just going to increase the amount of traffic turning left onto McLeod in order to access the on-ramp at Northwest? McLeod is a small residential street — which people often forget has a speed limit of 25 mph. There are also a lot of critters that cross the street here.

Wait….. this is their solution? Permanently close an on-ramp and completely inconvenience the population because why…. they can’t figure out how to stop traffic with a traffic signal so people can access i5 from that location? That’s been there for a very long time???? The things this city is doing are really not making sense.
