WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The severe weather shelter in Bellingham has extended its operations while the status of the Ferndale shelter remains under review as low temperatures are expected in the 20s through Monday.
Whatcom County officials announced that the Bellingham Severe Weather Shelter (SWS) will remain open for an additional night, providing overnight accommodation through Sunday, January 25, 2026. The facility is scheduled to close on the morning of Monday, January 26, 2026.
Bellingham Severe Weather Shelter
Located at 925 N. Forest Street, the shelter operates from 4pm to 8am. Check-in is available between 4pm and 8am. Space is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Street parking is available, though there is no dedicated parking for guests.
The facility allows service, emotional support and therapy animals, though staff may request that animals be crated if they become disruptive. Limited storage is available for personal belongings.
Bellingham Day Shelter
The Bellingham Day Shelter, located at the Old Lighthouse Mission Drop-in Center at 1013 W. Holly Street, will continue operations through Monday, January 26, 2026. The shelter is open daily from 8am to 4pm. Carts are not permitted inside but limited storage is available. Similar to the overnight shelter, animals are welcome with potential crating requirements.
Ferndale Severe Weather Shelter
The Ferndale Severe Weather Shelter, located at the United Church of Ferndale (2034 Washington Street), is currently scheduled to remain open through Saturday night, January 24, 2026. A decision regarding a potential extension for Sunday night will be made later this weekend.
The Ferndale facility provides 15 beds with check-in between 5:30pm and 8pm. Guests must check out by 9am the following morning. Off-street parking is available and pets are permitted.
