BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police Department (BPD) personnel were kept busy earlier today, Monday, January 1st, as they assisted the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) with an apprehension and then investigating and locating a stabbing suspect, all on Northwest Avenue with in a mile and a half.
About 11:20am, BPD officers were asked to assist WCSO personnel in the area of W Bakerview Road and Northwest Drive. A subject with active warrants for their arrest had been located. According to emergency services radio transmissions at the time, the subject was resisting being taken into custody.
According to Whatcom County Jail records, Cody At Baker, age 34, was arrested and booked into the jail by WCSO under the following warrants.
- stalking – Bellingham Municipal Court
- failure to appear in court (FTA) for 1st-degree criminal impersonation
- 2x cyber stalking (gross misdemeanor) – Bellingham Municipal Court
- 2x FTA for 2nd-degree assault
- 2x FTA for 4th-degree assault
Baker was also charged with suspicion of 3rd-degree driving while his license was suspended and resisting arrest.
Baker forfeited a $10,000 bond in June after failing to appear in 1 case in Whatcom County Superior Court where he faces 2nd-degree assault and unlawful imprisonment charges. Felony bail jumping has since been added to the list of charges in that case.
As of 5pm, he remained in custody pending being able to post a $20,000 bond or $2,000 cash bail.
In a second incident at about 11:40am, BPD officers were dispatched to a report of a stabbing that occurred on the Northwest Avenue bridge over Squalicum Way (aka “rainbow” or “coal mine” bridge).
Officers arrived to find a subject with a laceration to their chest and rendered aid. A detailed description of the assailant was broadcast. Shortly after, a man fitting the description was located nearby, detained and ultimately arrested after being identified by a witness.
According to jail records, Jayden Nicholas Janisch, age 22, was booked into the jail by BPD and charged with suspicion of 1st-degree assault with a knife and 4th-degree assault (domestic violence).
The injured subject was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center by Bellingham Fire Department personnel.
